Root Canal Retreatment in Pittsburgh
Oftentimes an endodontically treated tooth can last many years with no complications or re-infections. However, sometimes a tooth that has already received a root canal can become contaminated with bacteria months to years after the initial treatment was completed.
Some common causes of failed initial root canal treatment include:
- Not returning to the general dentist in a timely manner for the crown or permanent filling
- New decay that develops underneath the crown or filling
- Missed canals inside of the tooth
- Fractures or cracks that introduce new bacteria inside of the tooth
- Bacteria and salivary contamination that was able to get underneath the crown or filling
A retreatment procedure involves drilling a hole through your crown or permanent filling, removing the old filling material inside of your tooth, adequately cleaning and re-shaping the canals, and replacing the space with new filling material. A temporary restorative material (filling) is then placed at the top of your tooth and you would return to your general dentist for a new crown or permanent filling.
